Thumping is one interesting behaviour of gerbils, where they make a rhythmic sound with their hind legs. Reasons why gerbils thump are to warn the colony from danger or in sexual excitement. The pups usually thump without any particular reason and mostly when they open their eyes because everything around is new and a bit scary for them.
