Because gerbils are desert animals they don’t drink a lot of water. A gerbil will drink an average of 4 ml of water a day, which is indeed not much. For example rats drink about 20-50 ml, a mouse drinks about 15 ml.
Gerbils bodies are designed to save as much water as possible, because of their natural desert enviroment. The results of that are very small amounts of urine (like a single drop) and dry feces.
